Just after midnight, witnesses from a private ambulance crew saw a van traveling south on Lilly Road Southeast run a red light at Pacific Avenue Southeast before slamming through the wall of Phyl?s Furniture, according to Olympia police. The driver then backed the vehicle out of the building and fled the scene. Witnesses took down the license plate information and called in the incident. Olympia police later arrested the man at his home and he was booked into Olympia City Jail, according to a news release from the police department.

No one was in the store at the time, but the van went about 10 feet into the showroom and damaged the wall, several windows and inventory. The store, located on the 3500 block of Pacific Avenue, is across Pacific Avenue from the end of Lilly Road.

The driver, who was the only person in the car, was not injured.

Store manager Bryan Stuart arrived at the building about 12:30 a.m. to find a section of the store in ruins.
The mess left behind includes damaged furniture and a gaping hole in the store that Olympia fire patched up with plywood.

While picking up large pieces of glass as co-workers swept and vacuumed debris, Stuart estimated about 30 pieces of furniture were damaged, including television stands, lamps and couches.

?This is basically garbage now,? Stuart said pointing at heavy scratches on a television stand. Despite the inconvenience of damaged inventory, the store opened on time today. He had no immediate estimate on damages to the store or inventory.

?It?s not going to stop us,? Stuart said.
